Our stay at JJ et Euphrasie was upsetting. After an excursion, we came back to find our luggage forced open, the suitcase locks broken, and cash missing. The hotel’s cleaning staff had opened our bags, as far as we could tell. The hotel denies responsibility, but that doesn’t change what we found. We discovered it only when we got back, so the suggestion that we should have reported it immediately misses the point. We didn’t file a police report, but that doesn’t mean the theft didn’t happen. Not every traveller feels safe or comfortable dealing with local police in a foreign country. Having a safe in the room doesn’t excuse staff tampering with our bags; guests shouldn’t have to worry about their belongings in their own room. The hotel’s reply seems aimed at discrediting us instead of dealing with the facts. It accused us of being “constantly dissatisfied,” when all we asked for were the services we paid for and clear pricing. We were charged more than the price confirmed through Booking, and billed for an extra night that the hotel refused to refund. We only asked to pay what had originally been agreed. Suggesting we were trying to get a “free night” was unfair and offensive. Service was poor and unpleasant. Staff took a long time to respond and didn’t keep the schedules or commitments they made. For the quality and service, the hotel was extremely overpriced. We experienced theft, overcharging, and poor treatment, and strongly recommend avoiding this place. There are many other options in Madagascar where guests can feel safe and treated fairly.
