Le Grand Bleu

The manager was discreet but a huge help with planning our trips and transfers, and the driver who handled the airport rides was warm, friendly, and full of information about Nosy be and Madagascar. We had a very welcoming family stay here in mid-July, before the busy season, and almost had the place to ourselves. From the hilltop garden there are lovely views over the ocean, greenery, and local cabins. The pool, restaurant, and lounge are beautiful, and we liked the small, personal feel much more than that of a big luxury resort. There are 15 bungalows at reasonable prices, set apart around the garden so each has privacy. They have terraces and hammocks, and most have air conditioning, though it can only be used from late evening to early morning. We were there in the austral winter and still found it hot enough. I wouldn’t choose Madagascar in summer. Our bungalow hadn’t yet been renovated, but we saw some of the updated ones. They’re simple, clean, and practical. The staff were always smiling and ready to help. We took half board and were very happy with the plentiful, varied, fresh food, nearly all homemade. Everything is washed and prepared using boiled water. Nobody in our family got sick, even after raw vegetables and cocktails with ice.

Danny was a great host and helped us set up activities. The rooms were lovely, and having air conditioning was a real treat. We enjoyed the food, and the staff were really nice, though lunch could take a while. They warned us about that. It has a very family-oriented feel, so it may not suit a young couple or friends looking for a different vibe. I went with my brother, and we still found the other guests friendly, and went out a few evenings for a more social atmosphere.

I liked it so much that I came back for a second stay. Le Grand Bleu is a wonderful place, with polished wood floors, tiled bathrooms, and lovely four-poster beds with mosquito nets in the bungalows. The infinity pool and views are world class, and the food was the best I had during my three months in Madagascar. The owners, Jaques and Celine, are two of the kindest, friendliest, most engaging people you could meet. I can’t recommend the place highly enough. Stay here if you get the chance.

We had an unforgettable honeymoon here, and the hotel did so much to make it personal and special. Dany and Aria were attentive and helpful, arranging lots of excursions so we could really experience Nosy Be. The staff were polite and friendly, and we also enjoyed the spa’s ylang ylang oil massages. The views from the pool are beautiful, and the cocktails were fabulous. There was delicious fresh fish and seafood every day, along with plenty of other choices on the menu. They pay close attention to details, and it all felt worth it. We’d recommend it to anyone after a peaceful holiday with some adventure.
