Almost ten years later, I still think this was my best hotel room ever. We arrived at 5 a.m. on a cold night, after the buses had dropped us off so early, and Marc already had a room ready even though we’d expected to wait in the entrance. It was warm inside, and in the morning we woke to fresh homemade bread and a lovely breakfast. After a long time travelling around Southeast Asia, that felt like a dream.

I especially liked the misty mornings and soft rain. It felt calm and refreshing, with birds and insects as the main sounds. Thittawlay House is a quiet, affordable place among the trees near Mine Lone Hill. The meals are simple, and the amenities are basic but clean. If I get the chance to visit Kalaw again, I’ll stay there.

I spent a month there and really enjoyed how friendly everyone was. The cabin feels like a hidden treasure, and the place gave me a real sense of Kalaw. The garden beside Mine Lone Hill is cool and full of seasonal flowers in different colours and scents. Rare birds live nearby, and sometimes you can spot them from the garden. The residents are always ready to help, including arranging a car or bike. Breakfast has lots of choices, with great strawberry, peach and raspberry jams, homemade pancakes and banana bread. The electricity even stays on when downtown loses power.

Update, April 2023: I still find this one of Kalaw’s most charming places, and the staff are lovely and always helpful. But after my recent experience with the owner, I wouldn’t stay again. She handles bookings but is rarely there. Her attitude toward guests felt off-putting, and the customer service was unprofessional: arrival dates got mixed up, and a new booking was accepted over an earlier confirmed one. There was little care for guests, and no effort to find a compromise that would satisfy the customer. I wouldn’t expect that in tourism. Earlier review: The hot shower was especially welcome on cold mornings. The facilities are simple, but locally designed and have what you need. Set in a beautiful garden, the place has bungalows and rooms in a brick house. It’s affordable and includes breakfast, with homemade bread and jam, rice, coffee, tea and fruit. The staff are helpful, and the electricity and internet worked, which felt unusual these days. A little hidden paradise in Kalaw, and worth supporting the local families who work here.
