The location is very good, but I’ve had two serious problems with the staff. On my last visit, I couldn’t understand the security guard’s English, so I asked for someone who could speak English. That staff member criticized my English as terrible and hard to understand, then said his own English was better. When staff can’t understand a guest, they get angry and blame the guest. They also charged me $20 over a barely visible yellow mark on an old, well-used towel. I didn’t even notice the stain until it was pointed out, and the dispute held up checkout by 10 minutes. Could you spot this tiny mark?

There are plenty of nearby cafes, both local and European-style, and the main attractions are only a 5-10 minute drive away. We arrived at 6 am and were checked in for free, which was a lovely surprise. The rooms and bathroom area were roomy, easily big enough for two, and the price was great for what we got. Grab only seemed to offer motorbikes, so we asked reception to arrange a regular taxi. We got lucky and found an English-speaking driver for half a day, for just 28,000 kyats. Enjoy Mandalay 😊

The breakfast had a decent selection, and the staff spoke only a little English but did their best to help. For the price, the room was fairly okay, though it could be more comfortable. It felt dark and old, and the furniture seemed like it needed better upkeep. Our air-con even shot out ice cubes for a while, lol. Bearable, just not especially comfortable.

We had to leave at 3am for the train to Hsipaw, and the staff were ready to help us check out even at that hour. They were helpful throughout and knew some English. We’d arrived a day before our booking, and they found us a room without charging extra. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a roomy shower and hot water. There’s a rooftop restaurant serving tasty food at affordable prices, plus a bakery next door for snacks. Excellent service, and I’d recommend staying here.

The bathroom was spotless, and the WiFi stayed fast the whole time. Breakfast was the usual Myanmar hotel buffet, though I especially liked the scrambled eggs. Staff were friendly and understood enough English, and the hotel was close to everything, though I’d suggest taking a TukTuk around. The furnishings look worn, as others have mentioned, but they’re still perfectly livable. We had a wonderful stay at Royal Pearl Hotel.
