The location near Shwedagon Pagoda works well for sightseeing, though traffic can be heavy at certain times. Getting downtown is fine, but if you’re heading to industrial parks in the west or north, leave a little extra time. The street outside is lively, with people and stalls, yet the noise doesn’t reach the rooms. Breakfast is served from a set menu in the rooftop restaurant, which has a spectacular view and an unusually close look at Shwedagon Pagoda. The meal is filling and feels luxurious, and there’s enough variety to keep it interesting over several nights. The area also lets you see Yangon’s traditional scenery as the city changes. Azumaya Hotel is a Japanese business hotel in Southeast Asia. The Yangon property used to be called Lavender Hotel and changed its name to Azumaya Hotel in 2019. The building isn’t especially new, but the price, Japanese-speaking service, and extensive breakfast selection help it stand out. My room wasn’t large, but it was just right for one person, with a desk and chair that made computer use comfortable. I also had a bathtub for a long soak, and appreciated the complimentary minibar drinks, including Myanmar beer.
