The driver eventually appeared, asked for my name and hotel, and turned out to have been at the airport the whole time. He’d got my name wrong when looking for me. I’d already waited nearly an hour and a half for the pickup, which was supposed to involve a sign with my name. I couldn’t find anyone, and the hostel didn’t answer when I called. After I emailed, they said the driver was stuck in traffic and would be there soon. On the way, he asked whether I knew where the hostel was, then called someone to get the location. We got to Balco Harmony hostel at about 9:30 p.m., but nobody was there. I’d booked a single room, and the driver said it was room 21, with the keys in the door. There was no room like that in the building. I was told to walk five minutes from the main building, but nobody said which way. The driver asked me to pay, and I laughed and said I wasn’t paying for a room that didn’t exist. I tried the owner, but no one answered, then the driver disappeared. I was left with nowhere to go, in terrible heat, with my phone nearly dead. I emailed the owner again and never got a reply. That was my experience with this hostel.

The older woman handling check-in was sweet and let us switch rooms. She’s the only reason I’m giving this place a star. The older man with her made me feel more creeped out than anyone ever has. He stared at me for minutes, and I felt as if he was plotting to rape me. I’ve never felt that way before. His looks disgusted me and still haunt me. After one night, I didn’t want to go back in case he was there. Extremely uncomfortable. I only use hostels to get cheap sleep. The price was good, but nothing else was. The rooms were very dated, which I could accept, but unbearably hot with no air conditioning. The fans were useless, and even though I prefer warm weather, I was sweating so much I couldn’t sleep. Around 5 a.m., cars started buzzing past on the busy street, with unreal noise. Forget sleeping unless you have earplugs and a white noise generator. The Wi-Fi only works in the lobby, not in the room at all. I’d never stay here again, even for free.

It’s been renovated recently, so the older reviews may no longer apply. These days it’s studio apartments for rent on Airbnb.
