Chalets Chamarel

Chalet 7 was spacious and conveniently close to the restaurant. We had a great stay at Chalets Chamarel, with friendly staff, good service, and food that was good overall. The west coast views, especially of Le Morne Brabant, were stunning. Thanks to Vanusha, Dalida, Sebastien, and everyone in the restaurant and housekeeping teams. I’d definitely recommend Chalets Chamarel.

Those sunrise and sunset views were unlike anything we’ve seen before, and Daniel was a bright spot at the restaurant. His energy, smile, and professionalism made our stay more memorable. The food was good, though breakfast could have offered more fruit, yogurt, and other choices. Restaurant service overall fell short of what we expected, and much of the staff seemed confused and undertrained. The room’s decor impressed us at first, but then we noticed mold across the ceiling and bathroom mirror. It looked like an ongoing problem. We also found dried blood on the side of the bed curtains the night before leaving, and a huge amount of lizard droppings on the bed cover. The room felt absolutely filthy. Cleaning was supposed to happen twice daily, but it was sometimes done only once, and we had to ask for it repeatedly during the first few days. Even after cleaning, the floor was sometimes still dirty. We understand the work is difficult, especially when there were at times only two people cleaning all the rooms from morning until night, but the hotel needs more cleaning staff and better room cleaning. There were lots of insects inside, which we expected in a forest, but the hotel didn’t seem to have taken steps to reduce them. Gaps between the windows let them in, and without screens on the windows and doors, it was hard to leave them open for fresh air without letting insects and other animals into the room. We raised all of this with the manager before leaving, but didn’t feel heard or understood. He said the room was dirty because we’d declined cleaning on our third day, the day before we left. We declined because we hadn’t been satisfied with the cleaning and didn’t see a reason to request it again. The view and restaurant might bring us back, but the rooms need a lot of work.

The area is so peaceful, and having a restaurant nearby adds to the stay. Chalets Chamarel feels like a special place to enjoy nature and those breathtaking views. One thing to watch for is the narrow road up there. Rain can make it tricky, particularly in a small car, so take it slowly and carefully.

We stayed for two nights, and that mesmerizing view alone made the trip worthwhile. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and I enjoyed the stay enough to give it five stars. The room was nice, though a few repairs are needed, so there’s still room for improvement. (Pun intended.)
