Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldivas

We were seriously disappointed by how our honeymoon turned out. We’d booked this as a once in a lifetime trip, and it ended up being the worst holiday ever for us. Our formal complaint is still active after we raised the matter with management during the stay and later with Meliá head office. The biggest issue was illness. On day two of our six-night stay, both my husband and I came down with serious gastrointestinal symptoms and spent most of the trip bedridden. Guests in nearby villas told us they had the same symptoms around the same time, and resort staff, including the on-site doctor, acknowledged this. When we brought it up, the resort pointed to news articles about increased gastrointestinal illness across the Maldives, and mentioned blame and airborne virus. We didn’t find that response adequate. We also didn’t see extra cleaning or hand sanitiser stations, despite the reported rise in guest illness. There was a separate issue with our Luxury Escapes all-inclusive booking. Morning and afternoon tea were included, but on arrival we were told those inclusions weren’t available. We hadn’t been told beforehand, and had to ask about it ourselves. The setting is beautiful, and the overwater villa was what you’d expect from the Maldives. We stayed from 23-29 March 2026, but that didn’t make up for the rest of the experience. If you go, you might want to bring hand sanitiser, Panadol, diarrhea medication, and plenty of hydralyte just in case.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, and we loved the location. We really didn’t want to leave.

The staff were amazing, and the place felt magical. We had our best holiday here.

Lyndon and Nandan deserve a special mention for being so attentive and friendly. The resort was fabulous, and the location was great.
