Dhaan Retreat

A good spot for sushi in Hulhumale. The restaurant itself is nice, but the cooking takes a while.

A good place to stay.

The room looked fairly new and was standard, but the stay went badly from the start. We had emailed a few days ahead to arrange airport pickup. They confirmed it, including round-trip transport for an extra $20 per person, but nobody met us at the airport. Staff from other hotels said they weren't there and directed us to the information desk. The desk called, but no one answered, so we were told to take the airport bus. It cost $1.50, took 10 minutes, and left us a five-minute walk from the hotel. There was no reception, though a young man outside helped carry our bags to the room. We asked about the breakfast and water included in our booking. He said breakfast would arrive between 6:30 and 9:00 AM. We also asked for another towel because there was only one in the room. The replacement smelled unclean and seemed used. They gave us two small bottles of water when we asked, but never offered more during the stay. They asked whether we were going to a resort the next day, despite our eight-night booking, and seemed unaware of it. When we asked about excursions, they said to come back the following day. The room had a half-used toilet paper roll beside the bed. Under it, we found dust, a broken bed slat, and a tissue with something unknown on it. The fitted sheet and pillow had blood stains, and the duvet had no cover and was filthy. There was just one small shower gel for two people. The next morning, breakfast came at the agreed time: a plate each with a fried egg, sausage, three slices of untoasted bread, butter, and jam, plus one small bottle of water to share. That was the only breakfast they brought up in all eight days. After that, they didn't try or say anything. When we returned to ask about excursions, the only suggestion was one all-inclusive night at a resort for $1070 per person. We declined. They went across the street to speak with a young man at home, then came back with an offer of $250 per person for an excursion. We said no to that too. They didn't speak English or give us useful information. We were also told we had to return before midnight because the door would be locked and nobody could let us in after that. The Wi-Fi didn't work, and the rooms weren't cleaned. After two days, we went to Maafushi for three days, even though we'd already paid for this hotel. We stayed at a proper hotel there that cost much less and was a thousand times better. We took two great day trips, and both for the two of us together cost less than the single excursion they had offered. We left our keys behind, but when we came back, no one had entered our room to leave water, toilet paper, fresh towels, or anything else. They never came in to clean or bring us anything after the first day. We can't recommend this place. It's also one of the more expensive options in the area, where there are plenty of other hotels.
