Xibalba in town hostel

4/13/25 - I met some great people here. The pool was nice, the hanging beds were cool, and the place was super clean. Having AC at night was a plus. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the main part of town. The free breakfast was very basic, just bread, fruit, and jam, and tours or transport booked through the hostel cost more.

Friendly staff, a great location, and clean rooms and toilets made this a perfect stay for us. There’s a spacious outdoor area too. The shower didn’t work with the showerhead attached, so we had to take it off and use the low-pressure hose instead.

We arrived at Xibalba and were given a dorm key, although I’d booked a private room. They first tried to say that was what we’d booked, then admitted it was a system error. We got a discount on a sunrise SUP tour as compensation, which was fine since we wanted to do the tour anyway. We were told we could move into our private room at 3 after leaving the dorm at noon, but when we checked at 3:15, they still hadn’t started cleaning it. The staff didn’t seem to care much, apart from the guy who helped with the SUP tour, and the pool wasn’t very clean. The front door was always open and the room windows couldn’t be locked, so we didn’t feel safe leaving our things. Staff didn’t speak much English. Breakfast was very simple, especially compared with the amazing breakfast at the cheaper hostel we’d stayed at before. The showers didn’t work properly, and Wi-Fi sometimes cut out, with no signal at all in the dorm. I don’t usually write reviews, but I think you can spend your money better somewhere closer to the lagoon. Decide for yourself, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

A really nice, cozy hostel with a relaxed feel. The staff are sweet, the rooms are clean, and breakfast is free. There are plenty of good places to eat nearby. 🌟
