Hotel Mision Cerocahui by Balderrama Hotel Collection

We were in Cerocahui for two days and wanted to treat someone to a nice dinner, though we weren’t hotel guests. The restaurant and lobby have lovely decor, so we expected a feast. There was only one option, a set menu costing Mxn590 per person. The soup was good. The steak was well done, and they didn’t ask how we wanted it cooked. It was a small piece, no more than 150g, but the good Chihuahua vaca saved it, so it wasn’t bad after all. It came over a big bed of well-made homemade mashed potatoes, which filled us up. The pecan pie dessert was great, according to my companions. That was the whole menu. The bread was good and homemade, but they charged us for each tiny plate when we asked for more. Local wine was almost 200 per glass, and a regular 335ml beer was 89. I felt awkward treating friends to limonada. The bill for four came to Mxn3314, and I couldn’t even get a copy because the cashier was awfully busy on the phone. The waiters were attentive and proper, though. There were only two tables, with no more than 10 guests altogether, which gives you an idea. As a side note, the cheapest room at Hotel Mision is about 5000 pesos. We stayed at a nice, homey family hotel in Cerocahui for only 1000 pesos.

Staying in a former Jesuit mission makes this hotel really unusual, and breakfast and supper were quite good. The rooms, though, are very small and have no heat. You have to light a wood stove yourself, and the fire can go out during the night, leaving you to wake up in a very cold room. The hotel is quite expensive.

The rooms are clean and the hotel itself is nice, with friendly, helpful staff. Still, charging 50 pesos a day for each device to use the internet feels like a cheap move for a nice hotel.

They offer good tours and activities timed so you can arrive on El Chepe and still see the town. They also pick you up from and drop you off at the train station in Bahuichivo. Service is excellent. The food tastes good but isn’t anything special, which is why I’m giving it four stars. The pool is tiny, but it was fine for the kids.
