Hotel Gallo Rubio

The small family cafe attached to the hotel had lovely service and good food. Local people often came in to pick up food, which says a lot. Our room was reasonably comfortable and felt safe for sleeping and keeping our things, and we had a good time overall. We booked a basic double for 10 days, and the price seemed fair for what we got. The staff were great, with 24-hour reception and snacks and drinks available, which came in handy. They don't speak English, though, so you'll need some Spanish. There was renovation work going on, and it got a little loud during the day. The room was the main disappointment. It had no windows except a small one in the bathroom for ventilation, so it felt stuffy and claustrophobic. The shower had very low pressure and sprayed everywhere because the shower head had lots of limescale. The mattress was too firm for me, though my partner didn't seem to mind. We only had sheets, no proper blanket, but that worked out since it was warm during our stay. The area felt a little unsafe at night, but came alive during the day with local flea market style stores everywhere. I'd suggest taking an Uber or taxi straight to the hotel if traveling there at night. Being within walking distance of many great spots made that tradeoff worthwhile for us, though solo women travelers might feel differently.

There was major construction, so we heard jackhammers at 7am as well as crying babies at 3am. The neighborhood was bad, and there was the sound of gunfire too. I'd rather stay at the cheapest hostel on the planet.

It's a 15-minute walk from downtown, and the hotel was clean and quiet, though construction was still going on. Just be aware there were no towels or blankets, only sheets. The TV didn't work, and there was no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan.

The room was really nice and clean, and the price is more than fair for the location. The front desk ladies were fantastic, very friendly and helpful. I'd recommend this hotel to everyone.
