Casona Alonso 10 - Hotel Boutique

We liked this hotel enough that we'd stay here every time we're back in Guanajuato. It's a beautiful boutique place about half a block from the gardin, with friendly, helpful staff and comfortable air conditioned rooms, a welcome feature when summer gets warm. It has eight rooms, and only one has two beds. The historic center is easy to explore from here. The one downside is parking, which is a couple of miles away. Given where the hotel is, that makes sense. Parking itself is free and secure. Call when you're arriving, and they'll open the gate and arrange a ride to the hotel. We didn't eat at the restaurant, though it smelled great and lots of people came in to dine. There's also a cool bar and lounge below the hotel. We spent a couple of hours checking out other hotels nearby while we had time to kill. Some were nice, but most didn't have A/C, and none felt as friendly. Call directly to book, and they'll match or beat third party room rates. I forgot to take photos before we settled in, so forgive the unmade beds.

Our children loved their meals, especially the omelette and orange juice, and my husband thought the hot chocolate was some of the best he'd had. The food was amazing and well priced. The hotel has a lovely historic atmosphere and is beautifully decorated.

The restaurant is one of the town's highest rated, and we had a very nice breakfast there. Next time, though, I'd skip prepaying for it. The included options were limited to eggs and chilaquiles, and I'd rather order from the menu, which has amazing choices, and pay separately. The staff were lovely, and the rooms were comfortable and air conditioned. At night, noise from one of the biggest nearby nightclubs was a problem, so bring earplugs. The cultural experience was a treat. We enjoyed a mezcal tasting with Cristian at the subsidio bar, and there were nice extras like a tequila drink at check in. The decor mixes traditional and trendy touches, with beautiful art all over this conveniently located boutique hotel. My main concern was the Wifi. We were given a password, but it barely worked for a few minutes over our entire 48 hour stay, which was an issue because I needed it for business. I'd stay again and hope the Wifi is better next time. Casa del Rector is a nice sister property, though more expensive, near Museo Diego Rivera.

Our luggage disappeared from the room while we were out enjoying the city on our first day. The cameras in that specific area mysteriously weren't working at the time. We lost more than $7000 in valuables. Manager Sergio Guerrero and Mauricio Barradas both said they'd contact me and ask their insurance about the loss, but neither followed up. They wouldn't give me any insurance information and stopped helping after that. I spent the whole night filing a police report instead of relaxing on vacation, and just wanted to get home. Three months later I'm still waiting for a response. I don't recommend this hotel.
