Hotel Socavon

The staff are friendly and the service is very good. The hotel is a beautiful building, and its interior looks great. But the room equipment feels at least 20 years old, and the mattress springs press into your back. There's no luggage bench, so your suitcase has to go on the bed. The closet is just a rod with hangers. The bathroom is clean but ugly and uninviting. Its shower curtain hangs from an old, slanted, rusty rod. For what the room costs, I don't think it's worth it.

We were driving around Mexico for 30 days and stayed here for one night in G'to after spotting it in our guidebook. We probably wouldn't have checked it out otherwise, and I'm really glad we did. The place has some of the coolest decor we've seen, and we've stayed in plenty of interesting spots. It was clean, had hot water and good parking, and the full breakfast was included in the $42 price. Centro is about a 10-minute walk.

The staff were attentive, friendly, and efficient, and laundry is available for a reasonable price. The hotel has been beautifully renovated with a mining theme that reflects Guanajuato's history. The rooms (habitaciones) had unreliable Wi-Fi, though, and when night temperatures sometimes drop to single digits, extra blankets should be provided routinely. There weren't any. Otherwise, it's a good place to stay in a convenient location.

Everything is within walking distance, and it's a lovely place to visit. The hotel is nice, though you can find other places for a little less or a little more. Breakfast is good, with a nice Mexican style. I recommend the bestec breakfast.
