La Cañada

The grounds were kept clean and looking good, and my room was spacious and comfortable. The internet was fast and stable, and I had no trouble with hot water. I didn't have a vehicle, but the entrance is down a steep hill, so it's a bit of a climb back up to street level. Breakfast in the dining area was excellent, with delicious food and great coffee for 150 pesos. Staff were friendly and rooms were cleaned daily. I recommend it highly.

The restaurant only serves breakfast. It was good, though the choices were very limited, and there’s just one other restaurant nearby, open for dinner only. Getting around on the steep hills at this elevation takes a good level of fitness, so it doesn’t seem practical for people over 50. Our room was spacious, with a strong Wi-Fi signal, and the suite had its own bathroom. The hot water took several minutes to warm up. The fourth-floor terrace has a lovely view of the nearby mountains, but despite the place being empty, we were put on the third floor. The furniture and towels were worn out. On the first night a frustrated neighbor shouted and cursed for half an hour at 3 a.m.; the next night, dogs in the area barked through the night.

Getting to this place was a real challenge. The driveway is so steep that Ubers and taxis wouldn’t go down it, and the hotel is far from downtown with no convenience stores nearby, so come prepared with everything you need. The incline also makes it hard for cars to reach, and there are no elevators, which makes this a poor choice for anyone elderly or with breathing or mobility problems. There’s no refrigerator or AC in the rooms, so you have to sleep with the windows open. That meant no quiet: we heard dogs, roosters, and staff banging things around. You have to request everything, too. We asked for an iron, a hair dryer, room cleaning, and coffee cream, which you have to pay for, only to be told they had no cream.

Denise at reception was the best, and the hotel itself was beautiful, clean, and quiet. The hot shower had good pressure, and when the Wi-Fi in my room acted up, they helped get it fixed. The bed is memory foam and much too soft for me, though. I prefer a firm mattress, but I know that’s personal.
