Spirit Holbox

The location is idyllic, just seconds from a beautiful private beach with gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. We slept so well and had a special stay, and I hope we can return. If I had to pick something, a hairdryer would have been useful. There were gaps in our room door, which made me a little squeamish about the tiny gekkos wandering the halls, but none came in. The staff at the beach bar Fragota beach club were so kind and friendly too. Thanks to the young man who brought me coffees at 8am.

A great spot away from all the action, with an awesome hotel, amazing staff, and everything clean. Marina beach club next door is a great hangout and included. The bar and restaurant are great too. Ask about the breakfast options, the chilaquiles are off the hook.

The location is great, and the hotel itself is nice with good service. But for a beachfront hotel, there was no beach access. I wish I’d known before booking. My pictures show what I mean.

We left after three days, even though we had booked two weeks at the Spirit. The place felt dirty and was noisy. The windows looked like they were never cleaned, despite daily room cleaning, and the room photos made the rooms look much nicer than they were in person. They offered us a higher-tier room, but it wasn’t better, so we declined and moved somewhere cleaner by the ocean. Our toilet flooded the first time my partner flushed it. The hotel has a septic tank. The kitchen staff played loud Mexican "gangsta" music late after their shifts, and at 2 a.m. it woke us up. When my partner asked them to turn it off, they made fun of him. It seemed like they were having a party on the rooftop, right above our room. We also had trouble getting airport transport information. They offered to provide it when we booked, but after we paid for the two weeks, we called several times. They answered once, said they’d get back to us, and never did. Breakfast was basic, and the eggs had a strong flavor, as if they might be cooked with lard. There’s a giant water jug on the top floor, which is a nice touch, but it’s empty by noon. The place didn’t feel professionally managed. It seemed like a bunch of young punks were running it however they wanted. Fuego, another hotel nearby, plays dance music late into the night too, so this area isn’t a good fit if you want quiet.
