Marta and Fabiola were outstanding, easily worth 10 stars. They provided weekly cleaning, fresh linens, and water refills, and the location was excellent. We’ve stayed in Maz Centro for four years, but this five-week stay left us with too many problems to come back. The internet kept cutting out and wasn’t usable for work. The apartment was also very dark, almost like a cave. Damaged window screens let mosquitoes and other pests in, and when people walked in the upstairs unit, bits of ceiling fell onto the bed. The refrigerator froze our food, and there was no way to adjust it. The upstairs shower didn’t work, though luckily the one downstairs did. The wooden platform floor in the bedroom creaked so loudly that I dreaded walking across it. I waited several weeks to write this because I wanted to be fair. I’d hoped to give five stars, but that wouldn’t reflect the stay.

We spent three months in a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment, and my wife and I couldn’t be happier. The live-in staff are good-natured and helpful, and they promptly take care of whatever we need. The place feels safe and family-like, and the other guests have been friendly and helpful too. It’s easy to feel at home when you’re cared for. There are five patios, so we can spend time with other guests or find a tucked-away spot to read or relax. The two dipping pools are a welcome quick escape when it gets warmer than we like. On warm nights, the softly lit streets make all the colors pop while we head out to try somewhere new for dinner. Villa Serena has made winter feel like a dreamlike adventure. The location is excellent. We’re less than a three-minute walk from the heart of Old Town, with two bakeries and various places to eat or get coffee along the way. All true, David and Lyn

I’ve spent three months each winter at Villa Serena in Mazatlan’s historic district for the past eight years. The gardens, artwork, and different levels are beautiful, and I love the atmosphere, very Mexican but modern. The king bed is comfy, and I appreciate the upgraded sheets. It’s close to everything in the historic area, and just three blocks from the beautiful Malecon and ocean. Marta and her staff are attentive and helpful. They’ll carry your luggage or bring in the water if you need a hand. The wifi has been upgraded and is very quick now. There can be occasional issues, like not having hot water all the time, as happens in Mexico. If you report it, they take care of it. This isn’t a five-star beach hotel, but the staff, people, and ambience make for a wonderful stay.

Marta is amazing, and the service she gives customers is something I’ve never received at another hotel. I’ve seen guests be rude and demanding toward the staff, yet they stay courteous and respectful, no matter what. Marta especially, and the whole staff, are professional, friendly, and respectful. Villa Serena is a beautiful traditional place, with a lovely building and fantastic location. Thanks to all the staff for a wonderful experience. Come stay here and you’ll be glad you did. Five-star service.

We stayed for a week in February 2025 in one of the two-level apartments, with a spiral staircase and beds upstairs. The building has 38 units and rises four stories in places, with a maze of courtyards and roof gardens to explore. You can relax with a drink and take in city views from all angles. Most of the guests that February were friendly Canadian and northern US snowbirds, many of them regulars. The resident cat sometimes came to say hello in the mornings. It’s truly a special place, and I’d absolutely stay again. The inner courtyards, plants, and water features made a lovely retreat after busy days exploring the city, and the staff were friendly. There are a few things to know, though. The upstairs floorboards creak incredibly loudly, so if one of us got up in the night, everyone knew. We could also hear the guest next door’s floorboards for a while. There are ceiling fans downstairs, but none upstairs. A mini-split was available, but felt like overkill and was on the opposite side from where I slept. A small fan would’ve been nice. The kitchen had a few dishes, but wasn’t very well stocked. We even had to buy a bottle opener. The back courtyard had no comfortable seating, just a plastic chair and a built-in concrete table with stools. There were a few plastic chairs and a couple of tables on the patios, but lounge chairs or hammocks would make them much nicer. And about the Jacuzzi: it was never hot. I heard a resident say, “I’ve been coming here 15 years and that thing has never been hot.” It sounds more like a plunge pool.
