The room was lovely, but dinner was a real letdown. My Alfredo came as badly cooked spaghetti in a thin, milky sauce with a little soft, fresh white cheese on top. It reminded me of a meal I might have thrown together ages ago during a hungry college weekend. The other three people with us were just as disappointed, and people we met the next day agreed about the place. There’s good food around town, but this wasn’t it.

We had a small room, though it was the last one available over Mexican Independence weekend. Most rooms open onto one of several pleasant interior patios, and the restaurant has great views.

The staff were lovely, and the beds were comfortable, with generous duvets, good linens, and plenty of thick towels. The pillows felt like actual pillows, too, not soft rocks. The hot water comes through right away, even with those 24 inch thick walls and the long distance to the water heaters. There are several large industrial boilers, enough to supply the big, solid copper soaking tub. The renovation of this 400 year old building is extensive, with tasteful choices and workmanship that left me amazed. That kind of quality is rare in Mexico, and this place is worth every peso. I’d suggest adding a WiFi repeater in each room and a Chromecast behind every TV for guests who’d rather not watch television in Spanish. Yes, we’re a bit spoiled! The room’s atmosphere had me thinking, “I must stay here” as soon as I walked in.

My room got a little noisy at night, but the location is great. The staff were great too. Julieta was especially helpful and felt like a friend, which I appreciated since my Spanish is bad.

The hotel is right in the center of town, and there’s a home style restaurant inside. The place has an old fashioned look; my room was clean but old and not very well maintained.
