Hotel Okaan

The restaurant and service were highlights for us, with some of the best food we ate during our two weeks in Mexico. The setting is beautiful and the architecture interesting, though the property could use some care. Getting there on the rough road put us in a less positive mood at first. We were the only guests for two of our three nights, so others may have a different experience. The lower pool wasn’t operating, perhaps because the hotel was so quiet. The upper pool was clean and lovely. It’s not a luxury five-star resort, but we liked it more with each day and would come back.

The rooftop sunset was amazing, with nothing but jungle sounds around us. It’s such a peaceful, laid-back place, even though it could use some repairs and care. We’d definitely stay again.

The hotel was a good deal at about 1350 MXN in low season, and the rooms were excellent for that price. We loved spending time by the pool. The Mirador is a nice spot for the sunset, sunrise, or stargazing, and there’s an abandoned natural canyon attraction about an 8 minutes’ walk away. The restaurant food was decent to good, and there were plenty of insects to watch, including mantises. Keep in mind that a taxi to or from the hotel costs 200 MXN, wherever you’re going.

A nice affordable option for spending a night in Chichinitza. It’s 1.5 kms from the main road, and the road to the hotel isn’t paved. I had no cell service, and the Wi-Fi only worked in the restaurant.
