Aqualuna Hotel

Room 1 was wonderfully quiet, with only the fountain outside to hear, even though the hotel sits at 10th and 14th St., just steps from busy 5th Avenue. That tucked-away feel was part of what made this place in Playa Del Carmen such a find. The hotel has charming architecture and a lovely setup, and the staff really lived up to their promise of infinite hospitality. Carlos at reception was great throughout my stay. When I mentioned I'd left my toothbrush behind and asked about the drugstore, he handed me a brand-new toothbrush and a full-size Colgate total. Whenever I needed help, the staff went out of their way. My room was simple but thoughtfully put together. The bathroom had Mayan toiletries that the hotel buys directly from the villages. Sustainability details show up everywhere, from the towel rack to signs about toilet paper, and some of the signs made me laugh. The bed was firm but comfortable, and I woke refreshed each day. The linens were crisp and clean. I did spot a sauce stain on a towel that was otherwise clearly clean, and some frost had built up at the bottom of the fridge. Neither bothered me much, though a small update might be due. At $60 a night, booked directly online in advance during low season, it felt like a real bargain for a small boutique hotel so close to everything. I'd love to return to Aqualuna with my love. It felt like a romantic little slice of heaven in the Yucatán.
