There’s plenty of room in this really nice home, and the ocean is close. Getting to restaurants is another matter: Google Maps makes nearby places look walkable, but the road is closed and a guard stops non-hotel guests from going through. You’ll need a car or bikes. A vehicle is also handy if you aren’t already familiar with arranging a cab in Playa del Carmen, since an easy-to-find phone number is hard to come by.

We rented the house for 16 people, but there wasn’t enough seating for everyone. The only dining table had ten seats, so we ate in two shifts. The stovetop didn’t work properly, the washing machine leaked into the laundry room, and the sinks were clogged. There was no dishwasher, so we ended up washing dishes on the terrace in pots, three times a day for 16 people. Meanwhile, the person doing exterior maintenance swept and used a leaf blower at 7:00 AM. Paying €5,000 a week to spend half the day washing dishes was frustrating.

It was about a 30-minute walk to the center, though the place itself was very nice. With it 30 degrees Celsius outside, we only had hot water. The air conditioning in my room didn’t work; someone came to fix it, but it still wasn’t working afterward. For the price, the place felt neglected. I think they need someone to clean, replace the water bottle and change the towels, or at least take care of things like that.
