D´Margo Hotel

Our original hotel fell through at the last minute, so we found this place instead. The rooms are simple but fair for the price, and it's an easy walk to both the beach and the main strip. Pubs and clubs next door mean you can hear some noise, which isn't surprising. The staff were consistently friendly, though they speak little English. That's just an observation, since I don't speak much Spanish either. No real complaints, and I'd stay again.

The common areas made my first few days in Playa enjoyable. There was a comfortable central pool, plus another shared space with hammocks, tables, and couches in both sun and shade. Some big posters covered the walls, hiding less appealing decor, but I liked that they weren't plain. A bit of construction was happening here and there, and most staff seemed busy but cheerful. The manager speaks English, while Spanish helps with the rest of the staff. The main downside is the club noise late at night and early in the morning. Since the clubs are popular and close by, you can hear the music. I think that's why this counts as a “Value Room.” Rooms are spacious and clean, and there are many of them. Amenities vary by room, with better ones available if you upgrade. I paid $25 for a day with AC, a mini fridge, and good water pressure. On $20 days I had no Ac or mini fridge and weak pressure. That room did have an extra bed, though, and was on the second floor instead of the 3rd. It's half a block from the beach and half a block from 5th, a great spot for getting around. I'd stay again if I wanted nightlife, restaurants, and the ocean close by. If I were going to bed early or needed extra comfort, I'd look elsewhere.

The noise was really, really loud, and checkout was a hassle. We nearly missed the bus because he had to photograph stains on the sheets that were already there when we checked in. I figured it was about keeping our 200 peso deposit. Don't stay here, you'll regret it!

I was nervous about booking after reading the bad reviews, but I was really impressed. The staff were friendly, and the location was great. Try being nice to them! Nothing was stolen, not even the big bar of galaxy chocolate I left out. The rooms were clean enough, and it was the first hot shower I'd had in Mexico. We had a small terrace outside our room and a larger shared terrace with hammocks. For what we paid, I couldn't have expected more. A 5* stay in a 2-3* hotel. Thanks d'margo!
