The sand was lovely and fine, but we came for the beach and sea and Playa del Carmen didn’t seem able to offer that. Playa Mamita Beach was dirty and crowded, with a wall of sargassum right before you could get into the water. We didn’t see anyone cleaning it all day, even though I understand sargassum happens. Maybe it would have been cleaned if the beach were private. Renting two chairs and an umbrella cost 1800 MXN, with some food credit whether you wanted it or not. Plenty of chairs were empty despite how packed the beach was. It’s very expensive. I’d give it zero stars if not for the nice sand. We don’t recommend it and definitely won’t be back. First and last time!

We caught Mamitas on a day with very little sargassum, and the atmosphere was nice, with relaxed music. Two chairs and an umbrella cost 1500 pesos, including 1000 pesos of credit for pretty standard food. The guacamole was delicious and the service was good. Towels were another 80 pesos, though bathrooms and an outdoor shower were available. A little farther south, someone was offering the same setup for 600, so it was a bit pricey, but I still felt okay about what we got.

The white sand along the Caribbean is lovely, and the shark nets and breakwaters make swimming pleasant. Since it’s a public beach, it can get busy. The main annoyance is people constantly trying to sell overpriced chairs, umbrellas, and drinks. Bring your own.

The food wasn’t the city’s best, but the service was excellent, attentive, and friendly. Since you’re right on the beach, the prices felt reasonable. Walk four blocks and you can get better food for less, though you’ll give up the beach view.

(JUNE 2025) There are plenty of restaurants nearby, and the public beach access in Playa del Carmen is good. We just happened to visit during seaweed season, so the timing was wrong. Street parking around the blocks is paid. At the kiosk you can use MXN coins or cash, though I’m not sure about cards. You can also download the app and pay online by credit card. If you pay at a kiosk, you MUST put the receipt on your dashboard. You don’t need to do that when paying online.
