The rooftop breakfasts had a beautiful view, and I really enjoyed the events and parties up there. Coco’s city tour was a highlight, too. The staff and volunteers are inspiring, and Lucy, Santi, Alicia, Lucas, Mauricio y todos los demás made my time in Playa del Carmen unforgettable. My room was spotless and smelled nice every day. I loved my days at Maui and hope I can come back soon. Thank you, Maui family! ♥️

I really liked the rooftop, with its city views and regular events. It’s an easy place to relax, eat breakfast, or meet other travelers, and the activities are a fun way to connect with locals too. The hostel is also in a great spot, a short walk from what you need, with a laid-back, social feel. Staff were kind and ready to answer questions about PDC or Mexico and help make the stay enjoyable. Everything was clean and well stocked, the bunks were roomy, and the dorm stayed at a comfortable temperature at night. There are plenty of outlets and a good-sized locker. Big thanks to Jimmy, Jairo, and everyone else for making Maui Hostel feel like home.

That rooftop was the best part for me. Breakfast is included and, though the serving isn’t huge, it was enough to get me through to lunch. Eating up there while watching the sunrise felt great. Maui hostel also has free drinking water, and the location is really nice. The staff were friendly, too. They put on rooftop events, from dance classes to casual meetups, plus group sunset trips to the beach and taco tours around town. The bar prices were actually cheap compared with other places on the main street. I enjoyed it enough to extend my stay, and I’d definitely come back if I’m in Playa del Carmen again.

The hotel is clean, nice, and safe, and you share it with people from all over the world. I like the people who are here. Saving money and giving where God knows, I like it, and I have no problem doing that. It doesn’t matter where you lay your head. We should thank God that we have it. Amen. Father, help us, help me complete my rent and food and buy food, in the name of God. Amen.

I’ve stayed at few hostels with this mix of close, friendly spaces and such a big social buzz. There’s pool time, beach hangs, dancing, karaoke, and activities, so it’s easy to lose track of the days. The staff, many of them volunteers, put in a lot of work to keep things running and the atmosphere lively. If you enjoy your stay, tipping them is appreciated. I also like the facility updates and the smaller smoking areas. A practical safety point: the bunks are unforgiving. I fell and hit my head, and another guest fell twice in one night and badly injured a shoulder. A reminder about bunk safety, especially after drinking, or suggesting bottom bunks for guests who plan to drink, could help prevent this. The bathrooms could use some attention. Some toilets need updated flush mechanisms, and straightforward signs explaining how to flush, including holding the handle down, would help. A few seem to need improvised fixes, even lifting the tank lid. More visible reminders not to put paper in the toilet could prevent clogs. The upstairs bathroom marked for women is hard to lock and unlock, and guests have accidentally gotten stuck inside, which is stressful. I preferred the old non-segregated arrangement. Having just one women’s bathroom upstairs out of three is less convenient, and the flushing and lock problems stand out more. Two years ago this all worked more smoothly. One possible quick fix would be adding a hose to each regular toilet, as is common in Asia. It avoids paper clogs and the expense of tissue, and using water to flush might help with toilets that otherwise don’t get flushed. I’m sharing this because I really love the place and want it to be as good and safe as it can be. A few practical fixes would make a real difference.
