Unic Design Hotel - Near Mamitas Beach Club

The noise was the main problem. Street sounds are expected, but at night it felt like camping right in front of a festival's main stage. During the day, the Italian restaurant downstairs played music that was unnecessarily loud. Even if you plan to go big every night, don't count on sleeping in with a hangover. The rooms were basic, with a good-sized bed and decent air con, but the WiFi was rubbish and there was no hot water. Breakfast was extremely basic. Staff were friendly enough, though not especially likeable.

The loud squeaking was back twice while I was writing this review. It went on all night at roughly 40-minute intervals, a long, very loud squeal. We don't know where it came from, but it sounded like it might be the toilet or some kind of detector or device in the room. We told the receptionist in the morning that we'd been unable to sleep. He said he'd check, but offered no compensation. At breakfast we asked for a little extra cheese because my partner doesn't eat the spreads that came with it. They charged 50 Mexican pesos, which seemed excessive, but we accepted it. After our tour, we asked if we could keep the room for another half hour or 45 minutes after checkout. The same guy said the rooms were occupied and he was generally only allowed to give a ten-minute extension. He offered to hold our bags. I told him it was disappointing that we'd spent the night unable to sleep and were still being charged extra at breakfast, though I understood the waiter may not have known how bad the night had been. A place that respects itself would consider compensation, perhaps in the meal. I also said it was disappointing that he wasn't flexible with checkout. He didn't seem interested and just repeated that he could keep our bags. That's not high-level service. With all-night noise that may be coming from inside the room, compensation is required. Shame. We'd expected some noise because the hotel is centrally located, but our experience was terrible. When we arrived, a very polite receptionist seemed to offer high-quality service, which made the later indifference more disappointing.

The staff really made our Mexico trip more special. Everyone at the hotel and in the restaurant was friendly and helpful, and they made us feel welcome throughout. When I got food poisoning, they went above and beyond to help my wife look after me. She also enjoyed all the compliments she got about her fashion. We can't fault the hotel or its staff, and we had a lovely stay in a great location.

The room was lovely and a good price, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. But the noise from the busy street outside, from 7pm to 1am, made it hard to sleep. The hotel isn't soundproof at all, so there was little chance of getting proper rest until the bars started to quiet down. It really spoiled the stay. A shame, because otherwise it's a nice hotel.
