Tecnohotel Casa Villamar

For the price, it offers little beyond a place to sleep. The building feels run down and full of potential that nobody seems to be putting effort into. The pool was cold, dirty, and unimpressive, and the rooms were very basic. It’s one block from the beach, not right on it, and about a 15-minute walk to restaurants. The location is just okay, with no other onsite offerings. Breakfast called “Continental” was just a plate of fruit thrown together. Service was slow or nonexistent, and the food was overpriced for its quality. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.

Room 11 looked out over the pool and garden, and we enjoyed our six-night stay last January2023. The historic building has high ceilings and spacious rooms. The pool was clean and peaceful, and breakfast and lunch were good, with a very reasonable extra charge. The beach is across the street, and the Progreso Malecon and restaurants are an easy walk away. All the staff were excellent, especially Richard at the front desk. We’ll be back!

The staff were great, but the room was only fair. The toilet seat was cheap and very loose, there was a big step down from the bathroom to the bedroom, and the TV came with two remotes and no instructions. The pool didn’t look very clear or inviting, but I used it anyway. I had to use a barstool like a ladder to get in and out. There were no handrails on any staircase. Not a great experience.

The pool was a nice place to unwind, and the staff were friendly and easy to approach. Casa Villamar has a distinctive feel and a history of almost a 100 years. It has just 12 rooms, which vary but are generally fine for basic needs. The building and rooms show their age, and the restaurant is adequate for guests. For what we needed, the location and atmosphere worked. The rates felt a bit high, though, and it lacks the usual amenities you’d expect from a high-end hotel. This Tecnohotel could be even more special.
