Hotel Tropical Suites

We paid $600p for the night, but left after just 30 minutes to find another hotel. It was that disgusting. The room felt like a prison, with a fake window, no TV, and mold along the ceiling and in the corners. The rooms were filthy too. I walked barefoot for a few moments and my feet turned black, with rocks stuck to them. There was a big hole in the ceiling near the fan stuffed with newspaper. The bathroom was awful, with no towels, one shampoo, dirt, and stains.

The semi-private balcony on our top-floor room faced the ocean, and that view was beautiful, worth having a room with no view otherwise. We stayed in December 2022 and paid $880 per night through Priceline, which was cheaper than the front desk price. The room was basic but clean. The hotel next door quoted us three times as much, so we were pretty happy with what we got. You can hear a little music from the only bar that stays open late, so bring earplugs if that would bother you when sleeping. I fell in love with Progreso. Its beach was the highlight of our two-week trip, with none of the sargassum weeds we saw in Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Flying insects got into the room because the windows didn't seal. The air-conditioning also didn't work, and neither did the water valves in the shower or sink. I'd prepaid, so there was no chance of a refund. Lesson learned: check the room before paying.

The price was good, but the room felt pretty stuffy and only had one window. Maybe one of the larger rooms is better. There are lots of inexpensive hotels around with pools, air-conditioning, and modern TVs.
