The place has a beautiful, solid old building and was clean and comfortable. Like other hotels from its period, it ventilates itself, so it stayed reasonably cool even in April, the hottest month. There is no air conditioning. There's plenty of potential with a bit of effort, but it needs a clearer vision and a change in attitude. For starters, the window in my dorm didn't work. The cliquey crowd during my stay also didn't help. They didn't seem like experienced travelers, more like The Thing That Wouldn't Leave on SNL.

From the terrace on the top floor, you get a beautiful beach view. The staff were friendly and very helpful, and there's even a billiards table. It's a comfortable, quiet old-style hotel, just a couple of blocks from the beach.

I was more in explorer mode than looking for big party nights, so the location worked well for me, close to the center. If nightlife is your priority, you might prefer somewhere nearer Playa Zicatela. I got a huge room with a balcony for 400 MXN a night, though maybe I just got lucky. Good value, and I'd stay again. The staff were very helpful and friendly, but don't speak English. The internet in my room was lousy, so I usually used cellular data. The low room price made the extra data cost manageable. They provided soap and hand sanitizer, and gave me a second towel when I asked.

The rooms aren't like the descriptions or photos. My room was full of bugs, the windows had no screens, and the fan didn't cool it down. Being beside reception meant hearing the phone and people coming and going all evening. The rooms with views are occupied by long-term residents, who take over the fridge, kitchen seating, and smoking area. I'd pay a few dollars more for a hotel room.

I stayed at Mayflower for a long time, and Julian and his staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and understanding. They do a great job running the hotel and helping everyone feel comfortable and at home, whether they're long-term renters or backpackers, young or old. Thank you.
