The location is great, and the staff were friendly and did a brilliant job calling laundrettes and helping us find a solution. We had a burst toilet pipe overnight, though, and didn’t realize until morning. By then all our clothes were soaked on Christmas Eve, when laundrettes would be closed for at least 48 hours. It wasn’t dirty water, but we couldn’t dry the clothes, so they smelled damp. The hostel first offered a free night for everyone, but several of us were leaving, so we asked for and received a full refund. We later used it toward washing and drying the clothes, which we wouldn’t have needed without the burst pipe. Two of my white T-shirts were stained and will need extra care at home. The pipe bursting was an unfortunate accident and completely outside the staff’s control. Even without that incident, I wouldn’t have stayed again. The online photos make the hostel look much better than it is. The cleaning cupboard was in our dorm, you have to pass through one dorm to reach another, and the storage under the beds has no locks for money, passports, or wires. The showers and toilets were clean, but less pleasant than at other hostels I’ve stayed in. It was far too expensive compared with other places. I think that’s because there aren’t other hostels nearby: this one is a five-minute walk to the beach, while others would be at least 40 minutes away. It has a monopoly on tourists staying in the area.

I spent two weeks at Cuca Macuca Hostal and had a wonderful stay. The facilities were very clean and welcoming, and it felt like a home away from home. I felt safe, and the social atmosphere made it easy to meet lots of people, including the owner, Sol. She’s very present and attentive, and clearly makes sure guests have a good stay. I especially enjoyed relaxing on the sky deck and in the dipping pool, with excellent views. The location is incredibly convenient for exploring the area. Cuca Macuca Hostal is a fantastic place in Puerto Morelos, and I’d highly recommend it for so many reasons.

I stayed in a private room with its own bathroom at this friendly, clean hostel with plenty of character, a welcome change in a town with more and more bland concrete condos. When booking, check which room you’re getting: one option has a bathroom down the hall, while another has it inside the room. Sol, the owner and operator, was extremely helpful and flexible when my travel plans went wrong. She’s kind, attentive, knows the area, and can give you the information you need. The service felt very professional. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable, with great linens. It was clean, Wi-Fi worked on several floors, shampoo and body wash were provided, and there was a drying rack for towels and other things. The common area has a kitchen, couches, and books. Upstairs, there are comfortable recliners and a small pool for a cool dip. The beach, Chedraui grocery store with ATMs, and town restaurants are all a short walk away. It’s a fun place to meet other travelers, with comfortable rooms and clean facilities. If your room faces the street, bring earplugs: nearby construction and large buses make noise from 7 a.m. until midnight as they travel to and from resorts farther south. I’d recommend it as one of the few local, budget-friendly places in town.

It felt like home sweet home. We loved staying here and Valeria gave us such a warm welcome. You feel part of a big family right away, and the place is peaceful and joyful. It’s very close to the beach, the dorms and bathrooms were always clean, and all the staff are kind and helpful. I’d definitely recommend this hostel.

The room was spotless and smelled wonderful, and the shared spaces were clean too. The shower had great water pressure. Sol, the hostess, was so nice and welcoming, gave us a tour, and shared recommendations. We were a one-minute walk from downtown and two minutes from the beach. This was easily the best place we stayed during our time in the Yucatan Peninsula.
