The hotel was right where the quinceanera was being held, which made it a practical choice for my weekend in Salamanca. There weren't many nearby options, and it worked well for what I needed. It's one of the larger hotels in the area, nine stories, with an outdoor pool, fitness center, restaurant, and free parking on site. My king room had the usual things, including a mini-fridge, iron and ironing board, flat-screen TV, small couch, and coffee maker. It was larger than I expected, with enough room to move around comfortably. The mattress felt too soft and a bit saggy, though, and may need replacing. I couldn't find a heat control, if there was one, and the AC control was worn enough that it was coming away from the wall. The elevators are small, so only a few people with suitcases fit at once. The pool felt fairly private while I was there, and I didn't see anyone using it. It isn't a resort-style pool, more like the basic pool at a modest hotel in the US, with limited services. It felt like stepping into someone's backyard for a swim. Breakfast is included at the restaurant. I chose the Mexican buffet over the usual American eggs, pancakes, and bacon. Those options are available too, made fresh to order. I liked the breakfast, and the attentive wait staff came by several times to top up my coffee. There weren't many English speakers around, so having someone who speaks Spanish with you, or Google Translate ready, helps. The hotel was a good fit for my stay, though it isn't deluxe and some things are outdated or need repair.
The restaurant food was delicious, and the customer service there was superb. Hotel service was great too, and the rooms are very nice. The AC needs more work, though: the rooms didn't cool enough during the hottest part of summer. If they fix that, I'd definitely come back in summer.
The restaurant was very good, and the chef made Indian curries after we showed him a YouTube video. Breakfast was the best. The hotel staff were very helpful, and they offer great shuttle service if you want to visit nearby places. Best hotel to stay at in Salamanca.
The property still feels secure to me, even though Salamanca has become much less safe over the years. The entrances seem well secured and you need a room key to use the elevator. The stairs are another matter, though, since anyone can use them. I had a clean room with fresh linens and no plumbing or AC problems, thankfully. But one elevator broke during our trip and wasn't fixed before we left. With just one small elevator serving the property, getting around was pretty painful. This was my third work stay at this Holiday Inn, five years after my earlier visit, and not much has changed. It's still fairly well maintained, though newer hotels are popping up around town and they'll need to step things up. I was assigned a double room this time, which wasn't as spacious or nice as the single-bed room I had before. The train track runs right behind the hotel, and that's the biggest complaint for many people. Since the town's intersections don't have crossing signals, trains blast their horns coming into and leaving town, even during curfew hours. Light sleepers should ask for a room facing the street. The fairly comprehensive breakfast buffet is included. The food is decent if you stick with the Mexican dishes and skip the Japanese options.
The staff are very friendly and the service is excellent, though tips are optional but very much expected. My double room had two full beds, a small couch, a table with two chairs, a little desk, and a minibar with two complimentary sodas and two beers. Coffee for the maker was complimentary too. The TV is small, at 32 inches. The breakfast is just OK. Buffet choices are limited, though you can order omelettes and hot cakes. Juice options are orange, green, and carrot. This is a good hotel for business travel, with nine floors and lots of rooms. There's a plaza within walking distance with KFC, Little Caesars, a food court, an Inbursa bank, and a supermarket called Comercial Mexicana. Curacao is close to the hotel, and I recommend ordering the pizzas there. Another plaza with a Starbucks, Carl's Jr, and other restaurants is 1.6 miles away, so you'd need to take an Uber.
