The old plaza is now completely taken over by the artisan market, which gives the place a lively feel. From the outside, though, the fence and plastic sheeting make it look quite ugly.

There’s no open space left, just craft vendors. It’s like an Aladdin’s cave, with some really beautiful things at very low prices. It’s a shame about the church square, especially the shops made from plastic sheeting. It doesn’t look very attractive.

There’s such a variety of handicrafts here, and I love coming to the plaza to shop and see how much value the artisans put into their work. If you’re traveling around Chiapas, it’s a great spot for souvenirs and small gifts.

Outside the former Santo Domingo convent, you’ll find the Santo Domingo handicrafts market. It’s a great place to pick up all kinds of souvenirs, from amber jewelry to textiles made in the communities around San Cristóbal de las Casas.
