I wanted a simple place to sleep in this historic city, but this was the worst accommodation I've experienced in my four trips to Mexico. The stay was a nightmare, with terrible management and facilities that fell far below basic standards. The shower barely dripped, making it impossible to wash long hair, so I had to use the sink where the water came out a little more steadily. There was no hot water either. I only didn't complain about the freezing water because the room was already sauna-hot. The hostel only allowed air conditioning at night, which I could understand, so I went out during the unbearably hot day. But when I got back at 9:30 PM, covered in sweat, it still wasn't working. Four or five people in the dorms were overwhelmed by the heat and couldn't stay in their rooms. The receptionist just chatted with a guest in the living room, apparently unaware of the problem and ignoring everyone else. This place's poor management and lack of basic standards make Mexico look backwards. I still plan to visit this beautiful historic city again, but I will never stay at this dreadful hostel again. Avoid it at all costs!

I met some wonderful people here and loved the conversations we had over tacos, on a bench, at a local bar, or during a sunset hike. We traded stories about travel and life, and it felt like a real community, like home, for people who enjoy being on the road without acting entitled. The games were fun too, from a family-night feel around the couch to hide and seek around town. Let your inner child out. Ask Miguel about Sardines in the plaza, or ask him to find you and see if he can. San Jose Del Cabo can feel sterile, with its boomer-like all-inclusive crowd, but this place has the cozy, artsy, lived-in charm of a small hostel. It draws energetic travelers and has a sense of community that made the stay special.

I wanted somewhere that felt like Mexico instead of a fancy hotel that could have been in the U.S., and Desert Heart Hostel was exactly that. We only stayed one night, but my boyfriend and I would definitely come back next time we're in San Jose del Cabo. It's a small place, with two private rooms and one dorm, which gave it a cozy feel. The main building has a bathroom with a large shower and a cabinet of shared items like bug spray, sunscreen, and bandages. There's a shared kitchen, and beyond it a partly covered patio with laundry machines and two more restrooms. The staff were lovely and genuinely eager to help. We especially enjoyed talking with the owner Dominique, who was warm and gave us plenty of suggestions for San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, where we were going next. She also let us know which services might try to overcharge us. She was a gem. The location made it easy to see the historic district and the Thursday night Art Walk. The entrance took a little finding among all the restaurants and shops on the street. The blue door with the Desert Heart Hostel sign is easy to miss, but the confirmation email said to look for Pietro's Ristorante, which helped us spot it. Inside, stairs lead up to a patio overlooking the street, then to the main room where the friendly staff welcomed us.

Desert Heart Hostel has ruined my ability to rate places. I used to hand out five stars like confetti at a toddler's birthday party, but now I see none of my previous restaurants or stays deserved them. All those reviews were lies. I was a fool. The staff were disgustingly friendly. Seriously, calm your palms, why are you all so nice? Whoever raised you did something right. I was so comfortable I started questioning my life back home and wondering if I should move to a hostel in Cabo. The atmosphere felt like a Mexican beach oasis, a therapy session, and a road trip playlist had a kitten together, named snuffles, playing with yarn all day. Thanks to the staff for the amazing hospitality. Every other stay now feels like punishment, and you've set the bar so high I'll need to chew five-hour Red Bull gum just to review somewhere else. Also, the owner Dominque is cool too. -Xavier out.

Jules, Annhia, Mar, Mike and Dom made this stay feel like a family, which matters a lot to me after many years working in hospitality. I spent four nights at Desert Heart Hostel and really enjoyed it. It's clean, relaxed, easy, and above all warm and homely. I'll no doubt pass through again. Thanks, guys.
