The hotel is beautiful, and having an elevator was a big help while traveling with an 84-year-old. The staff were great: they knew the city well and gave us clear directions and helpful recommendations. After ten days of eating out, I thought Tikua restaurants was THE BEST restaurant in Queretaro. Hasta la próxima, Gran Hotel!

From the narrow side exit of Gran Hotel on Calle Allende, I walked toward Jardín Zenea. That doorway once served Jesuit novices at the Colegio de San Francisco Javier. Along the plaza’s eastern edge, I saw around thirty fixed shoe-shine chairs in a long row, empty and bolted to the pavement. Their black metal frames and brass footrests looked like permanent public furniture. Shoe shining has disappeared from many large cities, yet it remains part of daily life here in Querétaro. The red buildings behind the chairs include the hotel, the Templo de San Francisco, and the Museo Regional. Three centuries ago, this group served religion, education, and the silver trade. The novices’ sleeping quarters are now suites, and their dining hall is a breakfast room, though the old geometry of obedience still seems present. I asked the concierge why shoe shines were still so common here, unlike in Mexico City or Guadalajara. He said polished shoes remain a strong sign of respeto in Querétaro. A man’s shoes show pride, discipline, and readiness. Bankers, engineers, and public officials keep up the custom because they need to look impecable. There’s a deeper history in the chairs’ design, too. The high seat, two steps, and footrest are said to descend from the icpalli, benches used by Mesoamerican lords, particularly Otomí and Chichimeca leaders. Before important ceremonies, attendants washed and prepared nobles’ feet. In pre-Hispanic belief, the foot connected people to the earth, so cleansing it was part of getting ready for a ritual. The Spanish banned the practice, and its return is sometimes marked by a Virgin of Guadalupe sticker on a shoe shiner’s box. By mid-morning, the plaza shows how these histories overlap. A young engineer in a fitted suit sits high above the crowd while an older man, often speaking Otomí, kneels to shine his shoes. For three minutes the social order is turned upside down, but both understand the exchange as one of dignity. The chair becomes a place where respect is negotiated. The daily ritual speaks to human dignity more than empire or church, with the past literally polished beneath people’s feet. #Jardín Zenea

Horrible experience. I booked a room overlooking the square, and the church bells pounded through the night about every 30 minutes. By 3 a.m. they moved me. I later learned they’d spoken with the church days earlier about the problem, but nothing changed. The staff seemed indifferent to how miserable it was. A hotel anywhere near five stars would have offered something, though I never asked. I was just glad to check out.

The location is excellent, with lots of tourist attractions within walking distance, and the historic hotel is beautiful. The staff were friendly and courteous, though the place feels a little dated. My mattress was lumpy and so uncomfortable that I didn’t get a good night’s sleep and woke up with backaches. I didn’t mention it during the stay, so they had no chance to fix it, especially since I was only there a couple of days. I did tell them at checkout, in case another guest had the same problem.

The Grand is beautiful inside and out, with excellent views, and we had a fabulous time in Queretaro. It was clean and comfortable, and service was friendly and prompt whenever we needed anything. The security was fantastic. A great choice for people of any age.
