There’s lots of room to settle in, chill, or get some work done at El Refugio. It’s lush and green, a real little oasis where I could happily spend the whole day. There’s a morning practice, plus a sauna and pool, and you can explore the surrounding area or stay on site. Marcello is a lovely, welcoming host who has put a lot of care into the place. He knows the area well and is happy to share local tips, practices, and his space. I’d recommend it 5/5!

El Refugio de Sayulita felt like a peaceful escape from the busier parts of town. It’s quiet and relaxing, surrounded by beautiful greenery, while still close enough to reach the beach and town easily. My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay. The rooms are charming and comfortable, with lots of care in the details. I especially liked the pool area and the calm, welcoming feel throughout. We’ll definitely come back.

Marcelo did everything he could to make our stay a good one and was very friendly. The room was comfortable, and the grounds were beautiful. There’s a pool, sauna, and kitchen. It’s a bit of a walk to the centre, but being away from the noise was nice. We had a great stay and would definitely return.

El Refugio isn’t perfect, and that’s part of what makes it feel real. It’s a little gritty, and the location is somewhat out of the way. Many rooms are reached by spiral staircases, which can be awkward with luggage, while the cheapest rooms are pretty rustic. Food in your room can attract ants, and although long-term guests can use the shared kitchen, it’s hard for Marcelo to keep it perfectly clean. If you’re after a luxury stay where you can pretend you’re on White Lotus, this isn’t the place. But there are rich opportunities for good vibrations. The place feels like it’s in the jungle, with lots of care put into different indoor and outdoor spaces. We met some cool, interesting people during our 12-day stay. Marcelo went out of his way to make us feel included rather than like just another guest, inviting us on several little outings. He helped sort out logistics a couple of times and was generous with his time. I respect his knowledge and how much he cares about people and things. There are some nifty options for using the pool, gym, and sauna, joining contemplative practices, and going on adventures. Some are free, while others cost a very modest amount. Marcelo often makes breakfast, which was good and very fair value.

We were already three weeks into our Sayulita stay when we found El Refugio, and wished we’d come sooner. It’s a true oasis, with a quieter setting than most places we visited, yet just a short walk from the beach and downtown. Marcello is an incredible host, and we wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks, Marcello, see you next time! There’s great wifi for remote work, and the shared kitchen was especially useful for our longer stay. The local markets have plenty of good food to stock up on. Marcello also offers day trips if you’d like to explore the area. You can start the morning with his meditation, work out in the on-site gym, then relax in the sauna and pool.
