Sayulita Beach House Hotel

We only stayed because we couldn’t find another hotel for the night, and I regret it. Nobody was there to let us into our prepaid room. It was filthy: dirty beds, a grimy shower, no hot water, and just two stained towels. We covered the bed with a blanket from our car and our beach towels. The sink was cracked, with the taps and drain not even attached. There was a broken, frameless mirror sitting on it, which felt dangerous. Gaps around the windows were big enough for a small animal to get through, and the sliding door barely moved. Don’t stay here. You’ll regret it.

The room we got was old, dirty, and rusty, nothing like the photos. The place itself felt dark and neglected, and it was far too expensive for what was offered. I also left a towel / pareo behind and was sure where I’d put it. I called repeatedly and emailed just minutes after noticing, but nobody answered all day. When we returned the next day, only the cleaning lady was there, and she said she hadn’t seen it. With no reception or responsible person on site, there was nothing we could do. It was a horrible experience. Don’t trust the pictures or come expecting a nice place. I have the real photos below!

Our family reunion was meant to be a wonderful trip, but staying here ruined the vacation. The room wasn’t even a hotel room, it was a former restaurant turned into a makeshift space. It was filthy, dark, smelly, and noisy. The air conditioning didn’t work, light bulbs were out, the flimsy doors wouldn’t lock, and the water barely ran in the primitive, dirty bathroom. One morning someone had urinated right outside our door. There was no manager on site and no services at all. For the top of the market prices they charged, this felt like a total rip-off. I’d give it no stars if Google allowed that. Most of the five-star reviews seem to come from “local guides,” and I don’t trust them. Don’t hire those guides either, they’re scam artists. This is the worst place I’ve ever stayed, and an embarrassment to Sayulita and Mexico.

The streets are colorful and calm, and Sayulita still has its charm, even though I think it has lost some of its real culture. It was my first visit. I didn’t eat there, but there are plenty of places to get food, though renting a tent and chairs is expensive. For the beach, morning is best, before noon.
