Flor De Cera

The gardens and mountain setting make Hostal Flor de Cera feel like a quiet escape, even though you can walk into town easily. The hosts are warm and know the area well, with tips for hikes, markets, and the Tepozteco pyramid. Inside, it has rustic Mexican style, colorful touches, and communal spaces that feel made for relaxing or chatting. The rooms are simple, comfortable, and clean, with natural materials. There are terraces, hammocks, and garden spots for reading or meditating. A lovely place to get some rest and a feel for Tepoztlán.

The mountain view from our balcony in the lovely “parrot” room was a highlight. My husband and I stayed one night, and the room was clean, with friendly staff who were happy to help. I did think it was a little expensive, though everything about the stay went smoothly.

There are three really good coffee shops within a block, since breakfast isn't offered. The place is family-run and clean, with simple rooms upstairs sharing a balcony and deluxe rooms on the top floor with their own balconies. They look over the courtyard, with mountains to the north. A couple of practical notes: as of January 2019, the back garden had been replaced by construction of a new building on the property. There's no sign for the office. Walk into the courtyard past the stairs, then look left for the large window with tour signs. That's the family's kitchen and the office 🙂

I can't recommend staying here. When I booked through Booking, the good reviews made it look like a nice place. On arrival they wanted cash, including a city fee and a Booking fee totaling over $450 pesos, then canceled the reservation and kept the money. I can't post this on Booking, so I'm putting it here. They asked if we wanted the ladies to make the bed, and we said no. When we came back, our luggage had been opened and our things disturbed. We told reception, and they said they'd speak with the ladies. I've also reported this to Booking services. They need to improve a lot.
