El Paraiso Hotel Tulum

We came as a couple with a rental car and stayed three nights. The beach, beach club, and area around them were relaxing. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Breakfast could be better, though it was still among the better ones we had in Mexico.

The breakfast was inconsistent. One day it was great and traditionally Mexican; another, it seemed like day-old chicken had been put in a tortilla just to use it up. I ordered the same dish on two consecutive days and got completely different versions. At least breakfast was included. We nearly passed on the hotel because of its star rating, but took a chance and were so glad we did. It’s a small, intimate place that feels like paradise, with comfortable, well-stocked rooms, lovely details, a spotless interior, excellent shower pressure, and attentive staff. The walk to Tulum’s beautiful beach is very short. We visited a lot of other hotels and didn’t find a beach as beautiful. It also works well for families, and the on-site restaurant was great for lunch and drinks. We’d stay again.

We were searched every day and treated like criminals. The hotel, el paraiso, doesn’t let you bring in ANY drinks, and they search taxis and rental cars each time they enter or leave. One night after dinner, police stopped us and searched the car and our belongings even though we hadn’t been drinking. They said they could smell alcohol, lol. I was forced to pay $800.00 American or go to jail for 24 hours. What are you supposed to do, argue with the police? They told me to drive to the nearest 7 11 and bring back cash. Another night, we got a parking ticket for parking on the sidewalk, which was also bull, and had to pay $250 American. The rental car company kept my deposit because the cops took the license plate when they issued the ticket. Tulum is crooked and the cops are bandits. I’d suggest staying away from Tulum period.

The place felt calm and welcoming, and it was spotless. I had a peaceful, relaxing stay at Hotel Paraiso, with genuinely kind, attentive staff who made me feel well cared for. Breakfast was nice, though the omelet could have had a little more egg, and the fruit juice was slightly too sweet for me. Small things. I’d gladly come back.
