Grand Slam Fishing Lodge Tulum

Fishing was good even with tricky weather. The guides could move between plenty of spots to find clearer water and less wind. The bonefish were ready to eat, and I got lucky with a nice-sized snook this trip. Communication was easy in either English or Spanish. This was my third trip to Grand Slam, and I keep coming back for the atmosphere and friendly service. I took my wife down for a few days in December, and the rooms were great, with the AC keeping things cool at night. The food was phenomenal. For our last dinner, the chef hunted a few fresh lobsters. We’ll be back again in 2025.

Our room had several problems: the small jacuzzi and shower didn’t work, and the fridge smelled awful. There was a lot of sargassum at this time of year, so the outdoor smell was bad too. On our last day we booked dinner for 7:30, but when we arrived there was no food and we were told to go to the next hotel. Before we arrived, they tried to charge us $1,200 for pickup in Tulum. We arranged it ourselves for $120. Activities were similar, with a tour priced at three times the usual amount. Manuel said a $50 tip per day of stay was expected. At the end of the day they put an envelope in your hands and expect you to fill it. They don’t even ask how the stay was. We travel full-time around the world, and this hotel got it really wrong. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We’re already booked to return next year. The operation manager, Manuel, and his staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great time while fishing, and housekeeping deserves a special mention, the best! This remote place is a five-star experience, from the service and rooms to the meals. The food tasted as good as it looked, practically Instagram-worthy. I’m still smiling about the trip.

Two days on the water and two Grand Slams. I took my usual solo fly fishing weekend at Grand Slam Lodge, and it turned into an experience I won’t forget. Amazing place, great service, and excellent guides. Kudos to the lodge staff and guides!
