This was one of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had, and I travel for work. My partner and I had a special getaway in this peaceful, quiet, scenic little slice of paradise. The views are amazing, and it felt intimate enough to get to know the staff. Everyone, from the front desk and restaurant team to the support staff, went out of their way to make our stay good. The massage and romantic dinner on the water were highlights. We especially loved coming back each night to turndown service with hot tea and cookies left out in the bed. The food was A+++++, breakfast included. I’d recommend it for couples, but it’s not the right place for kids. I do have one major complaint, and it isn’t the hotel’s fault. It’s inside a nature preserve, which adds to the beauty, but entry requires passing through security. Guests aren’t supposed to pay to enter. The front desk gives daily wristbands, but they’re flimsy and fall off easily, even though you’re expected to wear one all day. If you go to a cenote or other activity, good luck keeping it on. Usually showing my reservation was enough when I returned. One night the security at the park entrance was extremely rude, even after we showed our active hotel reservation. They wouldn’t let me in unless I paid. They told me to drive to the nearest 7 11 and bring back cash. Given SLH’s reputation, I’d expect a better system for park entry by now. I felt I was treated differently for being a tourist by the entrance agent and police officer. That wasn’t uncommon in Tulum, but that’s another story. The encounter happened at the end of our trip and left us with a bad taste. Even so, I highly recommend the hotel.

The property was more than we’ve ever paid for a hotel, but we weren’t disappointed. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms exceptionally comfortable, and the staff friendly and accommodating. We stayed in a partial sea-view room with a plunge pool and used it much more than expected. The waterside cabanas were beautiful and relaxing too. Free shuttles along the road make nearby beaches easy to reach, or you can rent a bike at reception. The quiet was one of the best parts of staying inside the park, with no loud music or parties nearby. Quiet hours start at 10 PM, which suited us perfectly. On your first visit, be ready to pay the park entrance fee in cash. After that, the hotel gives you bracelets for coming and going each day. The property really does go above and beyond to make the stay feel luxurious.

The hotel is gorgeous, the restaurant staff were amazing and friendly, and the food was delicious. We also liked how quiet it was. There isn’t a swimmable beach, though you can walk a few minutes down the road to a sister property for beach access. This could have been a five-star review if we’d received the room we prepaid for. We spent almost double because it was our honeymoon, and chose a much nicer room for the occasion. Instead, they gave us a lower-tier room and brushed it off as a decor change when we raised it. I’d emailed over a week ahead with my name, the room details and the occasion while arranging our airport transfer. They changed the room after we complained, but it still wasn’t as nice or as large as what we’d paid for. The resort was nearly empty, so I don’t understand why that was the only option. The listing’s garden room photos show a huge porch, partial sea views, a larger room and a kitchen table. Our “porch” with the plunge pool was small and had no sea view. Either the photos are extremely misleading, or they double-booked the room and took our money anyway. We only agreed to spend extra because it was our honeymoon, so the whole thing felt dishonest and icky. If we’d gotten the room we paid for, I’d have given the property five stars and recommended it to friends who are visiting Tulum in the coming months.

Beware. Tulum was a mess for us, and I felt harassed and treated like a criminal. They searched our car and belongings every time we went in or out, and one evening the police stopped us after dinner and searched us too, despite our not drinking that night. They claimed they could smell alcohol, then forced me to pay $800.00 American or go to jail for 24 hours. They told me to drive to the nearest 7 11 and bring back cash. The hotel, el paraiso, also doesn’t allow you to bring any drinks in. One night we got a parking ticket for parking on the sidewalk, which was ridiculous when the “sidewalk” was sand just two feet from the road. We had to pay $250 American. The rental car company also kept my deposit because the police took the license plate when they gave us the ticket. I’d suggest staying away from Tulum. I felt the cops and locals would steal and rob you. Other than that, we had fun, lol.

We loved our stay at Mi Amor and would recommend it. My wife and I came to Tulum for our first time on our first anniversary, hoping to try a bit of everything. The hotel is fantastic, beautiful and picturesque, with just 20 rooms. The lobby and pool look like the pictures, and there are lovely cabana beds over the ocean. The two women at the front desk were great, answered all my questions, arranged a safe, reputable taxi and made us feel welcome. It’s very quiet, and you can hear the waves hitting the cliffs as you sleep. The rooms are clean and have what you need, but they could use a small upgrade. The floors are worn, and the bathroom and shower could be improved. They’re not in bad condition, just not as upgraded or fancy as you’d expect for the price. Mi Amor doesn’t really have beach access, but the sister hotel about a 10-minute walk down the road does, and its beach is really nice. Mi Amor’s restaurant was decent, with a good simple breakfast but not many dinner options. The sister hotel has a much better restaurant, more choices and even Thai food, so we ate there instead. We worried about the location in the national park, a bit far from the central hotel zone, but it wasn’t an issue unless you want to walk along the zone. Getting into and out of the park was easy. The hotel gives you a wristband to show at the entrance during business hours. When the park is closed, national guard are there and ask to see your reservation. We showed a screenshot of our Expedia reservation, even when we returned around midnight, and had no issues. We rented a scooter, which was the best way to get around the hotel zone. Taxis were very expensive, $40 USD for a 10-minute ride one way. The location felt far enough into the jungle to avoid loud parties, yet it was about a 15-minute scooter ride to the central hotel zone at RosaNegra. The hotel zone strip felt extremely safe and full of tourists, day and night, and we never felt unsafe. I’d rate it 4.5/5. We loved the hotel and its staff, and would stay again. The price should be a little lower if the rooms stay in their current condition.
