Gran Hotel Diligencias

We were here for one night with a tour group, and the location made it easy to get around. Chapels are right outside, the plaza and several restaurants are close by, and the harbor and market are only three blocks away. Inside, the hotel feels grand, with marble floors and elegant furniture. The staff were completely attentive, and our room was nice, though basic. I tried the unheated pool and found it a little chilly, but I imagine it feels great on a hot summer day. We didn't come to Veracruz to spend much time in the room anyway. Wonderful place to stay.

Right in the heart of the historic area, with a spectacular view. There's lots of fun just across the street. This is my favorite place when I need to fill up my soul with happiness.

The location is good and the rooms are clean. This was my second stay here, and my second time in Veracruz. The mattresses are hard, though the pillows are good. Both visits, there was tension with the front desk staff. This time Cynthia (spelling?) came across as dismissive, almost rude. Another guest beside us said they'd been treated the same way and that the front desk hadn't followed their instructions.

The only thing I liked was the location. We stayed in rooms 215 and 216 while visiting Veracruz Civic Center, and the rooms were spacious, but the mattresses were old and lumpy. There was a body odor smell in the rooms, sheets, towels, and pillows, plus a strong sewer smell in the bathroom. The sheets were dingy and stained, and the towels were poor quality. The bathroom tiles were filthy, with black mold in the grout and broken tiles. The safe didn't work, and the rest of the hotel felt just as run down. The pool floor was dirty, and the metal furniture had no cushions. Elevator walls were peeling, and the hallway carpet was filthy and looked unvacuumed. There are bars nearby, and the one in the hotel plays loud music every day until the early hours. The reception staff were rude and unhelpful. We arrived around noon but didn't get rooms until after 3 pm. The same rude woman charged me incorrectly at check-in, then made it seem like my fault at checkout. From outside, at least, the hotel looks nice, freshly painted yellow and white.
