Nothing to complain about here. Everything you’d want from a hotel, and that king-size bed was so comfortable I slept like an angel and dreamed of butterflies.

The bathroom had great water pressure and temperature, the TV had lots of channels, and they left two small bottles of a good brand of water in the room. The room itself was comfortable, though it smelled like old men’s clothes, maybe because of the old wooden furniture. There’s only one tiny window, so there’s basically no airflow. Breakfast was fine, especially the fruit, but I wasn’t keen on the chilaquiles. The internet was neither fast nor slow. The parking lot is small, and I can’t see it fitting more than five SUVs, so I wonder what happens when the hotel is full. You have to call the front desk whenever you arrive or want to leave so they can open the garage door, and you need to ask for an iron. Staff were very polite.

A few blocks from Zitacuaro’s amazing central mercado, this was a comfortable, quiet place to stay at a very reasonable price. We stopped here on a road trip to see the Monarch butterflies nearby, and it was fabulous.

Please look elsewhere for a place to stay in Zitácuaro. The hotel itself was mediocre rather than terrible, but the towels were thin and scratchy. Breakfast was just watery coffee, a small bowl of bland fruit, and a couple of pieces of bread, more like what I’d expect at a cheap hostel. The reason I’m so angry is that MX$2500 disappeared from our room. When I arrived with my girlfriend, I had more cash than I wanted to carry, so I took MX$2500, about US$132 and more than twice the cost of our stay, out of my wallet and put it under a phone directory in the room. We checked out the next morning to see the butterflies. I forgot about the money until we were already at the reserve, where I had no cell reception all day and couldn’t call the hotel. I know I hadn’t misplaced it. Before arriving, I withdrew 6000 pesos, including six 500-peso notes. I left five of those notes in the room and kept one, and I still had the one I’d kept. After a lovely day at the reserve, we went back to the hotel so my girlfriend could pick up a bag she’d left there and I could get my money. The staff member at the desk took me to our room, which had been cleaned and was empty. The money wasn’t under the directory or anywhere else. Staff said the cleaner hadn’t turned anything in. I asked them to find out what had happened, then we waited about half an hour while they smirked and joked, as if they weren’t taking it seriously. They eventually put me on the phone with a woman and then a man who seemed to be the owners. They kept insisting in a smug, sneering way that they only employed trustworthy staff, or words to that effect. They mentioned cameras around the hotel, though obviously not in the rooms. They showed no concern about the missing money and denied any responsibility for themselves or their employees. They didn’t offer to investigate. When I asked directly what they planned to do to resolve it, they mockingly said, “absolutely nothing.” I lost my temper and left. I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry. It was my girlfriend’s birthday that day. I’d planned the trip to Zitácuaro and the butterfly reserve as a surprise, and the visit had been wonderful. We’d both been so happy, then this incident ruined the day for us. Losing what is a very substantial amount of money to me was bad enough, but spoiling her birthday was worse. I hope this review helps other people avoid the risk of their money “disappearing” and being treated with utter contempt by the owners. Please stay away from this awful hotel.

The staff are so friendly, and the rooms are comfortable. The hotel is really beautiful, like an oasis. Its one issue is that it’s far from Zitacuaro City.
