NADHIRAH I.
The room had some useful things: towels, an iron and board, a mini fridge, enough open floor space to pray, plus a sejadah and translated Quran. The room and bed had no odors, and the Wi-Fi was okay. Check-in was quick, about five minutes since I’d booked online, and the location is good. I stayed in September 2025. The problems started with the condition of the place. The lobby smelled like a wet rug when I walked in. There’s barely any lighting in the hallway, so it’s really dark and feels haunted. No mat outside the bathroom means the floor gets wet whenever anyone comes out, and the shower pressure is so weak I can spit harder. The toilet wall tiles were disgusting, though bearable, and looked like they hadn’t been scrubbed in years. There were no tissues, the stairs were dirty, and only two electrical outlets, one already used by the TV. Around 1 AM, loud banging, knocking, and running sounds went on for almost ten minutes. Maybe it was a ghost, but it was a bad experience. Parking was also cramped, with too little space in the hotel area. I’d read bad reviews from years ago and expected a better room, but many of the same complaints are still here. Hotel Seri Malaysia, do you take customer complaints into account? We all know the answer. I understand it’s an old hotel, but cleanliness should still be a priority, unless the goal is to attract more rats than customers.

The cafe food was delicious, especially the spaghetti bolognese, though they don’t accept QR payments. The water pressure was good and the air conditioner worked well. One of the complimentary water bottles in my room had already been opened. There was shampoo but no complimentary body wash, and the toilet paper could be better quality.

It’s right in the centre of Alor Setar, which is a superb location, but management seems to be letting the hotel fall apart instead of making the most of it. Its poor condition could harm Malaysia’s image with foreign visitors, and I’d suggest changing the name because it doesn’t reflect Malaysian identity. The bath towels belong on the floor as mats.

We checked into a family room for four adults for one night, March 2-3, 2025. The two reception staff arranged the check-in paperwork with straight faces and no welcome or smiles, and it took about 15-30 minutes to finish. There was no floor mat in the room, and of the two plug points, one was for the TV while the other was far from the bed. Very inconvenient. No extra bed, mattress, or blanket was available. We asked for two extra pillows and four towels and were charged RM50. I think those should have been free.

The restaurant is the reason I still come back sometimes. It serves good food at a good price, and the hotel works for one night if you plan to spend your time out exploring the city. The room is basically just for showering and sleeping. It’s sad that after staying here a few times over the past 20-plus years, the room still looks much the same. The furniture, linens, and bathroom fixtures all look very old and need renovation.
