The room wasn’t ready to be sold in that condition. There was rubbish on the table between the beds, leftover ice cream in the minibar, a little water in both kettles, an already opened tea bag, and no toothbrush among the toiletries. For what we paid, it was a real letdown compared with other hotels in the same price range. I hope the owner addresses the rooms and staff at SAMILA hotel. I definitely wouldn’t recommend staying here. My friend and I arrived around 3:30 AM on March 29, 2026, after walking around looking for a room for the night. The male night shift staff quoted 140 MYR, saying it was already discounted for Raya and would normally be 200 MYR. But we had seen the website rate was still under 150 MYR 😂. We were exhausted and didn’t want to argue, so we took the key for room 208. When I asked for a receipt, he said they couldn’t issue one because it was a Raya rate. I found that confusing and funny, since I’d never stayed at a hotel that didn’t provide a receipt for a discounted holiday rate 😂. At checkout around 9:30 AM, I asked the female receptionist for an invoice to claim through our company because we were on a business trip. A few minutes later she gave us one showing 130 MYR, which wasn’t the amount we had paid. When I questioned it, she corrected it and said the system had confused her. I joked, what if I said I’d paid 2,000 MYR? She blamed the system 😂. We also told the receptionist about the room. She passed the complaint to a male staff member beside her, saying he was the executive housekeeper. He listened while cleaning his teeth with a toothpick and didn’t respond professionally. He seemed confused about the room’s status and didn’t believe what we told him. The receptionist apologized and said she’d look into it, thanking us for letting them know. She said we were lucky we hadn’t asked for our money back.

Parking is easy to access, and the location is handy for walking to Amanjaya mall and Menara Kedah. A nice place to stay, too.

We stayed three nights. The rooms were spacious and clean, with the basic facilities we needed. It’s easy to walk to food, cafes, and nearby attractions from the hotel. This is a legendary old hotel in Alor Setar that’s been refurbished. The area felt safe, there was plenty of parking, and the staff were really friendly. I’d stay here again on my next trip to Alor Setar.

A water filter was my favorite thing here, since having clean drinking water matters when you’re traveling. The room was spacious, clean, and nice, and the bathroom was roomy and clean too. There’s also a TV and mini refrigerator. Aman Central Mall, Alor Star Tower, and Masjid Zahir are nearby. It’s about a 5-7 minute walk if you want to get around on foot.

There’s a water dispenser in the hallway, which was a plus, but I won’t stay here again. The room had a strange smell, like it had been smoked in by several previous guests, and the pillows were extremely uncomfortable. The towels felt cheap, the Wi-Fi was faulty, and the remote had no batteries, so I couldn’t turn on the TV manually. It took hours for the AC to cool the whole room, and parking was limited. I’d heard the hotel had been refurbished, but I guess I was wrong.
