Chateau One - Hostel

The common room makes it easy to spend time with other travelers, and the volunteers usually know the area well and have good suggestions. It has a charming layout and authentic Malay-style architecture. It’s a good fit if you want a hostel where you can socialize without the wild party scene, and it’s nicer than many budget places that don’t have a shared hangout space.

The owner and staff were really kind and helpful. It’s in the middle of Georgetown but tucked away on a quiet street, so it’s easy to get a break from the busy city. The hostel was clean and nicely decorated.

We had a really pleasant stay. The room was clean and comfortable, and the place had a friendly atmosphere and a nice common area to relax in. It’s right in the town center, but on a little quiet street. The owner and staff were great, and I’d come back when I’m in George town again.

The location is the main plus: Love Lane is a two-minute walk away, most George Town sights are walkable, and there’s no curfew, which works well if you’re out late. The hostel is generally maintained well, though the toilets feel run down. The shower water heater was good. My basic private room was just a mattress tucked into a corner of the building, with nowhere to hang clothes or a wet towel. Mosquitoes got in at night. Rooms are mostly on levels 2 and 3, reached by steep stairs, while just two toilets on level 2 serve both floors. Each toilet and shower share a stall, which limits availability. There’s no toilet paper in the stall, so you’re expected to take some from the dispenser in the common area first. An awkward rubber hose is provided as a health faucet and gets in the way when sitting on the WC. The desk is only staffed from 8am to 5pm. There’s no breakfast, and a sign even says not to use the water cooler to fill bottles. When reception is unattended, the fridge with water is padlocked. I chose this hostel because its rating was excellent, but the current conditions didn’t match it.
