The sea views and the city view at night were lovely, and the staff were great. The hotel has an impressive history and sits at the edge of town, away from the center’s bustle. There’s a good choice of restaurants, and breakfast in the Palm Court was calm, with hot food served and a self-service continental selection. After a hot day out, the guest lounge and Heritage pool felt like a sanctuary. Complimentary snacks were available from 6-7pm. For the price, though, the room was a major letdown, looking tired and below the standard of cheaper competitors. Two single beds had been pushed together, with no bedside unit. One side had no lamp until we asked, and then the lamps didn’t match. The wallpaper was peeling, the fan didn’t work, and the room seemed intended as a twin, with cables and switches in the middle of the bed. A loud wedding went on late on two nights. The gym is being refurbished, and the spa is permanently closed. There’s potential here, but it feels like the hotel relies on its history while falling short on the rooms for this price. Maybe other rooms have been upgraded, so check beforehand.

The room and view were the main things I liked. For a high-priced five-star hotel, often called the number one in Penang, the experience otherwise felt disappointing and not worth the cost. The facilities seemed average, frequent events made it noisy, and visitors who weren’t staying there often came to take photos and gather around, which could disrupt a peaceful stay. Service also fell short. When my taxi arrived, two male staff members were often nearby but never offered help or even tried to open the car door. This happened every time I returned. Check-in was underwhelming too, with no greeting or smile from the receptionist. I don’t recall anyone telling me about basic facilities like the gym, swimming pool, or Wi-Fi, which I think most hotels cover. Service was slow enough that I had to message just to get my luggage brought to my room. The food was very basic, with no fresh juice. They even served my coffee in a stained cup.

We liked the balcony, the refreshing fan above the bed, the great location, and the delicious food. The staff were friendly and eager to please. The pool was great too, though I don’t understand why it closes at 7 pm. For a five-star hotel, some room details were disappointing. One switch controls every light, so you can’t leave just one on. The rooms look good but aren’t very practical for tourists. There weren’t enough chairs to sit on or set clothes on, and just one luggage stand for a room meant for two. There was no table or seating for eating in. The desk wasn’t useful, and extra towels would’ve helped mop up water from the walk-in shower, which has no door.

The suite was spacious and beautiful, with stunning sea views that made the stay feel extra special. Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang has such timeless charm, luxury, and elegance, with a classic heritage feel alongside comfortable touches. From arrival, it all felt classy and relaxing. The staff were warm and attentive throughout. One of my most memorable hotel stays, and I’d absolutely love to return for another relaxing getaway in Penang!

Our Penaga Suite on the top floor of the Heritage Building was quiet, well appointed, and nicely proportioned. Still, after four days there, we don’t think the hotel currently deserves five stars, though a little work could get it there. The main stair carpet wasn’t cleaned during our stay. Debris and spilled food remained visible the whole time, and the restaurants need serious attention. Their menus were generic, and the service sometimes felt quite amateur. After one drink, my wife and I left to find inspiration outside the hotel. The evening drinks reception was a horrible experience. Guests seemed desperate to consume as much free food and drink as possible, and the atmosphere was like a free-for-all at a wedding reception. If we return to Georgetown, we’ll look into other options.
