Kimberley Hotel Georgetown

For the price, it’s worth it. There are lots of places to eat nearby, and you might get free parking if a space is available. The room is small, but it had everything except a freezer. Water pressure in the toilet was good. The pillows could be better for a more comfortable night. The TV isn’t very new, but it has YouTube and shows, which is good.

The location and balcony were the only things I was happy with. The balcony was handy for eating takeaway outside. Parking is very limited, so we were afraid to drive out at night because we figured there’d be nowhere to park when we returned. They told us to keep circling for public parking, but at night there weren’t any spaces. The floor was so dirty that my feet got filthy walking around barefoot after check-in. The bed didn’t feel clean either, and I kept feeling itchy after sleeping. They said to put a card on the pillow for fresh sheets, but the blanket had the same stain, so it felt like nothing had been changed.

My room faced the back alley, which made it peaceful and quiet. The water pressure was excellent, and the TV had Netflix and YouTube. I also liked the on-site dining, with reasonably priced set meals from RM22 and a good selection of Western and Malaysian dishes. The location is right in the heart of Georgetown, an easy walk from the night food market, art galleries, and plenty of local eateries. There’s a water dispenser and ironing facilities, plus a lovely sunrise view at the back of the property. City parking can be tricky, but the hotel has a dedicated lot, though it’s limited. A useful tip: the parking area connects directly to a food court, so you can cut through to the next street. I’ll definitely stay again!

Staff were friendly, and the location was good. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were fine, the air con worked well, and the shower had reasonable pressure. Our room was internal, though, so it was dark and poorly ventilated. When we arrived there were mosquitoes and we got a few bites, but they brought spray straight away and we had no more trouble. That can happen in the tropics, even at a fancy hotel. The room and bathroom were only so-so. Breakfast was included but had few options. The coffee wasn’t great and came with creamer instead of milk. I went for the cold half-boiled eggs and congee, which were fine, though it’s probably better to eat somewhere else. Without renovating, there isn’t much to improve besides the coffee and breakfast. I suspect some other rooms may be nicer than ours.
