Merchant Hotel

The vegetarian breakfast was a highlight, especially the fried rice, probably the best I had during my time in Penang. I also felt genuinely cared for throughout my stay at Hotel Merchant. The staff, from reception and housekeeping to management, were consistently kind and attentive. They shared local tips, helped with last-minute requests, and checked in with warm smiles. The room was comfortable and the location was excellent, but the people made the biggest impression. I’d happily recommend the hotel and plan to return on my next Penang trip. Thanks to the whole team for making the visit special.

Update: After staying a few days, I changed my review because I really value good hospitality. The staff were all kind and made me feel warmly welcomed. Along with the convenient location, that could bring me back. I’d ask for a room that doesn’t face Lebuh Leith, though, since the morning sun there is harsh and hot. The Lift Bomba also creaks and needs some repair. It makes me uneasy. Original review: Don’t be fooled by the 4-star rating on Google. I checked Motac, and this hotel isn’t on its rated-hotel list. The room was a letdown for a long stay, and at a price higher than the neighboring hotel, it was much smaller. The TV isn’t a smart TV, and although parking is free, arranging it is difficult. The front desk and other staff were professional. The lovely woman at reception made a great first impression, and I almost extended my stay right away, but after seeing the room I changed my mind. I’d go back to the neighboring hotel, which Motac has actually rated. This was my first day here, with 13 more to go. *sighs*

I stayed at the Merchant Hotel from September 14th to September 17th, 2025, and plan to come back on another visit. Breakfast was tasty and enjoyable, and the staff were friendly and gave excellent service. I’m especially grateful to Rankaesh, Afiq, Zul, Idayu, Mona, Mus, Kalai, Izah, Nyi Nyi, Aung, and Soraya.

It’s in a good spot, with attractions and cafes within walking distance. In our room, the TV had no channels, the hot shower wasn’t working properly, the phone didn’t work, and the toilet seat looked moldy. The bed, pillows, AC, and general cleanliness were acceptable. Based on my stay, the hotel fell short of what I expected. I hope they improve.
