We booked Holi 1 Medini Suites in Johor Bahru for our family of seven through an Australian booking agent. After several unanswered calls to arrange access, we arrived late at night following an international flight and were left stranded. The security guard confirmed the address, but there was no sign of the property. We were in an unfamiliar, dark area near Legoland, with low phone battery, no clear directions and no help from the host or agent. Thankfully, we managed to relocate to KSL Resort in JB city centre, which was much better situated, central, active and well supported. The lack of communication and responsibility left us stressed and vulnerable in a foreign country. Not recommended. This seemed like a SCAM.

The building is quiet, and the swimming pool is spacious, though the wading pool is a bit small. The place is showing wear and tear, and the parking ramp gets very tight in certain sections. Maybe a lot of residents are doing homestays? The guards are very helpful, I guess they’re used to homestay people.

Our room had a lovely view, and the garden and large pool were great. Shops and restaurants are close enough to walk to. The area is a little removed from everything else, but we came for Legoland, so that worked out. A car makes getting around easier since taxis can be hard to find and are expensive.

The deposit did come back after three days, but only after several calls and messages. Before that, this stay had already spoiled our Legoland day. We booked in June 2022 and missed the $60 deposit note tucked away on booking.com. They kept contacting us about it while we were in the park, three hours before check-in. We transferred it, then they asked for more documents and said we had to arrive before 5.30pm, because nobody would be there to help after that. We were disappointed, but since we'd paid for the place and the deposit, we went over. The apartment was nothing like the pictures. It was dusty and smelly, everything felt old, and my kids didn't like it. The blue sofa bed looked like it had come from a rubbish area. We moved out straight away and booked another hotel. I honestly didn't know whether to laugh or get angry. We aren't jokers to fall for your traps. I worried they wouldn't return the deposit if anything got damaged.

We spent a week here and found the new property well cared for. Our unit was comfortable and breezy, with enough bathrooms and toilets, a view toward the Straits of Johor and Singapore, and the sky garden right beside it. The park, playground, pool and gym were enjoyable facilities. It's set away from some everyday needs, though groceries at Jaya grocer were just five minutes away. Anjung had a local food court, and other Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Italian restaurants were about a 15-minute drive.
