Borneo Venture Hostel

McDonald's and pizza hut are right below the hostel, and centre point shopping centre across the road has pretty much anything you might need. The hostel itself was comfortable and clean, with friendly staff. I booked through Hostelworld, and check-in and checkout were a little confusing, perhaps because not many people book here that way. I wasn’t given a room key. They said my things would be safe, and they were, but I felt uneasy whenever I left. Also, the lift doesn’t stop on the 1st floor, so expect to climb two flights of stairs.

The rooms have air conditioning and bunk beds, with curtains around each bed for a bit of privacy. The WiFi was adequate, and the bath and toilet were clean enough. For a backpackers hostel at this price, the friendly, helpful staff make it a five-star stay.

We arrived to find that the room we’d booked for two people was already occupied. The hostel asked us to cancel the reservation, then refused to return the $9.00 deposit we’d already paid. The staff’s English was poor, the place looked dirty, and management seemed incompetent. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The hostel was clean, including the beds, and the rooms had AC. Breakfast was adequate, and there’s a common area with a fridge. Great location and staff.
