The good points were the location, free water, shared lounge, and basic things like the air con and water heater working. Beyond that, I was surprised by all the positive reviews. It's a budget hotel in a good spot, but our room smelled strongly of mildew, especially the sheets and pillows. The pillows and mattress were brown-stained from years of use. One wall had holes and another had peeling wallpaper, and the bathroom sink was only half attached to the wall. During our almost week-long stay, staff never cleaned the room. We’d booked online in advance, so felt stuck, and nearly asked for cleaning but decided to see how bad it could get.

Our four-person family room was up on the roof, so we had to go outside to reach it. The air con didn't cool the room, and there was barely any space, about 20cm between two creaky bunk beds. The shelving was only half built. The windows, mirror, and curtain were dirty, the curtain was torn, and all the bedsheets were stained. Wallpaper covered just one wall, and it had been put up very poorly and was peeling.

A great base for backpacking around Kota Kinabalu and Sabah. It's central, about a five-minute walk to the fish market and waterfront, and the roof terrace is a nice place to play cards or have drinks with new friends. Staff were friendly and happy to help arrange bus trips for large groups. Bottled water is sold here for less than at the shops.
